Making a Space Memorable

We pass by so many places in our daily lives. Sometimes a space will stand out and we remember it. What makes one place more memorable than another? It can be different things to different people, but usually it has something to do with the way the space was thought out.

A good design cannot be measured in a finite way – attention to multiple perspectives is needed. The most important part is getting to know the owner and getting to know the space. Then we can apply own knowledge and begin to look at everything differently. Sometimes the biggest challenges of the space become the pivotal point bringing out the best in the space. After all, there is literally no other place on earth that is exactly the same. Each place is unique to its precise location and its relationship to everything around it. So, we do everything differently and it shapes how we experience our surroundings.

Whether it’s an inside space or an outdoor space, all areas need to be memorable.

Design must have a cohesive vision to address the main goal of the space. Good design is not just what looks good, it is a dance that performs, converts, astonishes and fulfills its purpose.

In the world of landscape design, we call this place making. We want to know what makes a place special to you.

Here is a current example of before and after images for a memorable space we designed into a place of gathering and relaxation:

Articles on the design process is a journey - a story if you will - using the distinguishing qualities of the space; it's form and function, it's beauty and utility.
